Learn how to lay a solid accessibility foundation using WAI-ARIA landmarks. In this session, CGI will share our recommendations on how to effectively define landmark regions to create more inclusive user experiences. We will start by explaining the importance of landmarks and how they are leveraged by people who use assistive technologies (AT). We will then demo real-world examples of content that can be included within each landmark role to help influence decisions during the design phase. In terms of actually coding landmarks, we will explain the role of HTML5 sectioning elements and share best practices to consider during the development phase. Finally, we will wrap-up by emphasizing the importance of testing the user experience using AT and will note some AT/browser issues we’ve identified for landmarks.
